Open Forum-Middle School Facilities Renovation Proposal

"On June 21, 2005, the Corning-Painted Post Area School District residents will vote on the middle school facilities renovation project to enhance the educational environment for about 1,400 sixth, seventh and eighth graders at our two current middle schools, plus a new middle school site planned on Canada Road in the Town of Erwin."

Yes, there is certainly a need to renovate NB and CFA. However the proposal for a Canada Rd. school is both unnecessary and beyond what our budget can sustain. The school report card on the state ed web site gives the numbers of students currently in different grades in each school. Total future middle school population would run around 11 to 1200 students. Canada Rd. would have a population of less than 150 students from the Erwin Valley and Lindley area. If employment prospects don't improve, this population is sure to drop. The amount to run Cabnada Rd. would be over 1 million dollars and when the district picks up the cost of IB and QL, add another 600,000 plus. Add that to our current budget and you'll see that this area could become a ghost town!

I think it's important for the district to renovate the existing building on Canada Road to make a third middle school. The small school concept must to be the main issue with supporting the proposal.
