The Veteran's Project

Dear Blog Readers: An explanation as to the photos of markers for the Veteran's Memorial seems in order.

This all started when I asked Harold Semple about the location of a plaque for Veterans which the 1960 Town Board purchased and was originally mounted at the base of the flag pole next to the "Old LindleyTown Hall". Harold explained that it had been moved to the flower bed in front of the present Town Hall. When the flower bed was redone, the plaque was placed in Harold's office with the idea of obtaining a suitable marker for it.

Last Fall-2005, I asked the Board for permission to check out prices for such a stone. By the time I had the prices it was the end of the year. With Harold's term of office ending and Sally's beginning, I decided to wait until the March Town Board meeting to make the presentation.

Afterdoing so, several members of the audience indicated an interest in assisting with the purchase. This offer made several of us rethink the project. Originally, the idea was for the Town to purchase the marker for the plaque at the prices shown on the blog. However, before proceeding further, we decided to obtain input from the townspeople as to whether or not there was enough interest to ask for donations from the community as well as from theTown Board.

With support from the community, it might be possible to obtain a really nice memorial to honor the Veteran's of Lindley. Our idea is to place this in front of the flag pole at the present Town Hall . Sally has offered to create a poll on the blog to help decide which monument the Town prefers.

Why not use some of the money from past heritage days that was to go for a town park for this project whatever option you chose? We probably will never see a town park and i am not sure we need one that we have to pay tax money to maintain and repair vandalism that will happen there.I think this memoral would be a good use of some of that money what do you think lindley people ?

Sally,
Whatever happened with the idea of a small Town Park? Was it set to the side due to lack of interest or for monetary reasons? Just curious...Caton has such a beautiful small park, actually bigger than what we really could use, but was a great idea.

Tammy: There were rumors around that NYSDOT was going to put a park in down by the river at the end of Morgan/Lindley Road. At the last NYSDOT meeting at the Town Hall the state announced that they planned on putting in "wetlands and a boat launch" at that location. Nothing was said about a "town park". The state/federal government is required to replace "wetlands" they remove when they construct road projects. We all would prefer a town park, but it looks like that's not going to happen. Although a boat launch will be great. The state is actively working to get people to fish, canoe etc. on the rivers.

Sally: Thanks for your answer. One more for you...what if a different location could be found for a small park and the funds were raised within the community to build it by various events and fundraisers? Would something like this be impossible? If not, how could a "park committee" be developed and what course of direction would you suggest? Guess Im just not willing to completely set aside the idea yet. There must be something we could do. Thanks again!

Actually, the site at the end of Morgan/Lindley Road where the state wants to build a boat launch was perfect for a Town Park. I'd have to check with NYSDOT to find out the particulars about "wetland replacement" and what that involves. Perhaps we could "coax" them into allowing the Town to add a park to the site. Nothing asked, nothing gained, right?

Please keep us informed of anything you find out. I think it would be great to have a small park here for our children! Thanks again!

Tammy -there is an excellent park and playgrounds at Cowanesque Lake
outside of Lawrenceville-paid for by your Federal Tax Dollars. It should be used by more Lindley residents. It is not any further than the Presho facilities.
