July 8,1935 flood Corning & Painted post
Hi Sally
History Lesson for this week
Found these old postcards of 1935 flood in Corning/ Painted Post. With all the rain-a gentle reminder of the value of the dams to the south of us.
Top photo caption reads "Corning Glass Works and Pine Street Bridge July 8,1935
This used to be called "Smoke Stack City" by Dick's Dad
Lower Photo reads July 8th Flood at Painted Post .
These are the backs of the houses on High Street as seen from the viaduct (by Craig Park)over the old DLW Railroad tracks. In the far background is the roof of the old IR Foundry. I remember hearing my father tell stories about pigs swimming across the old Hamilton Street bridge. (Now being replaced by the high altitude monsters of the new Rts. 99 and 17)
Note the bird house in foreground.
